The belief in the finality of prophethood (Khatm-e-Nubuwwat) is not a later theological development. It was understood, articulated, and defended by the companions of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ within his own lifetime and immediately after his death.
The Qur’anic Foundation
The verse most often cited is Surah Al-Ahzab (33:40), describing the Prophet ﷺ as the “Seal of the Prophets” (Khatam an-Nabiyyin). The question is not whether this verse exists, but how the first community understood the word Khatam.
The Response to False Claimants
The clearest evidence of the companions’ belief is their unanimous response to those who claimed prophethood after the Prophet’s death — most famously Musaylimah. The companions did not treat such claims as a matter of opinion; they understood prophethood to be closed.
Why This Matters Today
When we examine the Ahmadiyya position, the central question becomes whether any new prophethood — however it is qualified — can be reconciled with the understanding held by the people closest to the Prophet ﷺ.
