Background
The status of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community within the broader Muslim world is a subject of significant historical and theological contention. A pivotal event was the 1974 declaration by the State of Pakistan, which legally deemed Ahmadis non-Muslim. The Ahmadiyya Jama’at has consistently contested this declaration, often emphasizing its current position that it does not engage in Takfir (excommunication) of others and thus should be afforded the same courtesy.
However, this article argues that, contrary to this contemporary stance, foundational Ahmadiyya (Qadian branch) texts and the statements of its early leaders, including sworn testimony given during the 1974 proceedings by the 3rd Khalifa, demonstrate a core theological belief that explicitly considers orthodox Muslims who reject Mirza Ghulam Ahmad as outside the fold of Islam (Kafir).
TLDR: Ahmadiyya (Qadian branch) Takfir Belief
Ahmadis (Qadian branch) believe that based on Mirza Ghulam Ahmad’s (MGA) divine revelations, anyone who knows of MGA’s claims and rejects him is not a Muslim and is considered a Kafir (disbeliever) (MGA Revelation) (B.A.M.A. Kalimatul Fasl), regardless of their other Islamic practices.
Core Tenet: Rejection of MGA equates to Kufr and exclusion from Islam
-
Divine Revelation as Basis:
- Mirza Ghulam Ahmad (MGA) claimed to have received a divine revelation in March 1906 stating: “every person to whom my invitation has reached and has not accepted me is not a Muslim and is impeachable in the sight of God.” (Tadhkira’h pg. 519; Kalimatul Fasl pg. 166, quoting MGA).
- This revelation forms the bedrock of the Ahmadiyya position on this issue. The Takfir is not primarily a reaction to others’ Takfir, but rooted in MGA’s own claimed divine instruction. (MGA on Divine Instruction)
- Another claimed revelation states: “Say, O Kuffar, indeed I’m from the truthful ones” (Ruhani Khazain Vol 3, Pg 565, Izala Auham), and “Those who are against me are named (by Allah) as Christians, Jews and Polytheists” (Ruhani Khazain 18:382, Nuzool-ul-Masih).
-
Unambiguous Stance by MGA and Successors:
- MGA: In response to a query about the contradiction between his earlier writings and his later stance, MGA stated that in God’s sight, those who call him Kafir and those who simply don’t believe in him are of the “one type” because not believing in him implies considering him a “Blatant Liar (upon Allah).” (Ruhani Khazain 22:167, Haqiqatul Wahi).
- Bashir Ahmad M.A. (MGA’s son) in Kalimatul Fasl:
- Explicitly states, “whoever does not accept me [MGA] is not a Muslim.” (Review of Religions, No 4, Vol 14, pg. 166).
- He argues that denying MGA is not just denying a Mahdi/Messiah but is tantamount to a true disbelief that excludes one from the circle of Islam, similar to the Kufr of denying Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). (Review of Religions, No 3, Vol 14, pg. 110).
- He asserts that the fatwa of Kufr on non-Ahmadis is not from them (Ahmadis) but from Allah, who has declared those who differentiate between messengers as “true disbelievers.” (Review of Religions, No 3, Vol 14, pg. 110).
- 2nd Caliph (Mirza Basheer-ud-Din Mahmood Ahmad) in A’yeena Sadaqat:
- Confirms, “according to him [MGA], those who deny him are Kuffar.” (Anwarul Uloom, Vol 6, pg. 150).
- He elaborates that this Kafir status applies even to those who don’t explicitly call MGA a Kafir but reject his claim, or even those who inwardly accept MGA as truthful but delay their allegiance (Bay’ah). (Anwarul Uloom, Vol 6, pg. 151).
- The 1st Caliph (Hakeem Noor-ud-Din) reportedly reviewed and endorsed these views.
Addressing Common Objections
1. “Ahmadis call Non-Ahmadis ‘Muslim’”:
- This is acknowledged as a “nominal and customary” practice or a matter of “common parlance (urf-e-aam).”
- The term is used because there’s no other suitable label (they aren’t Jews, Christians, etc.) and because non-Ahmadis claim to be Muslim. (Reason for using ‘Muslim’ term)
- However, this does not mean theological acceptance. The texts state that in reality, according to Allah, MGA, and the Jama’at, they are not Muslims. An inspired couplet even suggests they need to be “converted to Islam again.” (Kalimatul Fasl pg. 143; Mazameen-e-Bashir Vol 1, pg. 15).
2. “Non-Ahmadis are Kalima’h Reciters”:
- The Ahmadiyya response is that one cannot be a true “Reciter of the Kalima’h” without accepting MGA.
- Belief in all messengers (including MGA, from their perspective) is a condition. Denying MGA makes one a Kafir both outwardly and inwardly, negating the Kalima’h. (Kalimatul Fasl pg. 182).
3. “Non-Ahmadis are only outside an ‘inner circle’ of true Islam but remain within the broader Muslim Ummah”:
- This distinction is rejected. Kalimatul Fasl argues that denying MGA leads to exclusion from the same circle of Islam as denying Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).
- It states, “Shame on such an Islam whose scope is so wide!” to accommodate rejectors of a divinely appointed messenger. Believing in Allah but not all His messengers makes one a “true disbeliever.” (Kalimatul Fasl pg. 183, 177).
4. “Non-Ahmadis initiated Takfir”:
- MGA’s Takfir is presented as based on his divine revelation, not as a reaction.
- Rejecters of MGA and those who call him Kafir are considered “one type” because rejecting him implies considering him a fabricator.
- Even those who don’t perform Takfir on MGA but reject his claim or delay allegiance are deemed Kafir (2nd Caliph). (Ruhani Khazain 22:167; A’yeena Sadaqat pg. 151).
5. “Non-Ahmadis have only failed to recognize the Mahdi/Promised Messiah”:
- This is insufficient. Belief in MGA (as whatever he claimed to be, including a prophet in their view) is essential. Denying him as the Promised Messiah (who they believe is also a prophet) makes one a “true disbeliever” and excludes them from Islam.
- MGA stated that one who rejects him, their prior faith in previous prophets will also not last. (Kalimatul Fasl pg. 110; Ruhani Khazain 18:462).
6. “It’s ‘Kufr doona Kufr’ (a lesser disbelief)”:
- The concept of “Kufr doona Kufr” is interpreted to apply to different levels among various Kuffar (all of whom are outside Islam), not as a category within Islam. (Interpretation of Kufr doona Kufr)
- Non-Ahmadi Muslims are placed within this hierarchy of Kuffar. The 2nd Caliph stated there are two groups: believer and KAFIR; those not believing in MGA, for whatever reason, are Kuffar. (Kalimatul Fasl pg. 181; Anwarul Uloom Vol 3, pg. 419).
Conclusion from Foundational Ahmadiyya Texts
- Rejecting Mirza Ghulam Ahmad means one is NOT A MUSLIM (MGA Rev.) (BAMA KF) and is a KAFIR (2nd Caliph) (MGA One Type).
- This is considered a “True/Real Kufr” (True Disbeliever) that excludes from the “Circle of Islam.” (Excluded from Islam)
- The reasons for rejection (e.g., not doing Takfir on MGA or delaying Bay’ah) do not alter this Kafir status. (MGA) (2nd Caliph)
- The ultimate basis for this stance is MGA’s claimed divine revelation. (MGA’s Revelation)
- Therefore, in these texts, “Non-Ahmadi” effectively means “Non-Muslim” / “Kafir.”
Practical Implications
This theological stance has led to practical implications:
- Not praying behind Non-Ahmadis. (Prayer)
- Not giving daughters in marriage to Non-Ahmadis. (Marriage)
- Not praying Janaza (funeral prayer) for Non-Ahmadis. (Janaza)
- A general social and religious separation, where dealings are limited to what is permissible with any other Kafir. (Social Separation)

1. MGA’s Revelation (Not a Muslim):
Readers should be aware that the specific reference to the revelation cited from “Tadhkirah” is reportedly absent in recent editions of that work. This omission has led to speculation regarding potential efforts to revise or de-emphasize certain passages in contemporary printings of historical texts. However, this critical statement by Mirza Ghulam Ahmad remains clearly documented in a variety of other Ahmadiyya books from the period.

23. Implication — Social/Religious Separation:
[Mazameen e Basheer Vol 1, Page 11 in PDF]
“Then there is another thing, that there are two types of relationships in the world: religious and worldly… Now we see that the Promised Messiah has forever severed both these major relationships that could exist between Ahmadis and non-Ahmadis. In religion, he ordered not to pray behind a non-Ahmadi at all. If they die, no funeral prayer. For worldly matters, he said not to give a daughter to a non-Ahmadi. Now what relationship is left between them?”

Now if any individual or group in the Ahmadiyya circle after the death of Hazrat Promised Messiah raises this voice that peace should be made with the non-Ahmadis, then…the biggest condition is that the non-Ahmadis should kill their Messiah and accept God’s Messiah and Mahdi and come under his shadow of kindness. Then they are our brothers, but if they do not accept this condition…remember that peace with the beasts of the jungle and poisonous snakes is possible for us, but not with them.”

So, he (MGA) said to them, in order to complete the Hujjah (argument) against such people, ‘Since you consider those who have declared me to be Kafir as Muslims, so it has been proven that you also consider me to be Kafir, otherwise in your eyes, those people who have rejected me and become Kafir would not have been Muslims at all. So, by considering my Mukaffireen (those who declare me Kafir) to be Muslims, you yourself became a Kuffar.’”
